Fans of The Cryptkeeper are going to be bummed out as TNT has pulled the plug on the ‘Tales From the Crypt‘ reboot. M. Night Shyamalan’s was a hit internally at the studio, and they loved the direction that he wanted to take it but unfortunately due to right’s issues it just wasn’t meant to be. With such an open-ended idea you would think that outside of the name itself they could have tinkered with it enough to launch something new.
With a 10-episode order, you would initially think that the studio would be chomping at the bit to come up with a replacement. However, it looks as if they already have. According to TBS president Kevin Reilly:
“That one got really caught up in a complete legal mess unfortunately with a very complicated underlying rights structure. We lost so much time, so I said, ‘Look, I’m not waiting around four years for this thing’. Maybe that will come back around but in the meantime, Ridley Scott had come up, who has so much creative enthusiasm.”
The comment about Scott was from May’s announcement of a block of science-fiction based programming on the network. We now know that this is the timeslot which ‘Tales From the Crypt’ was initially set to take.
The bad news is that two original shows, ‘Time of Death’ and ‘Creatures’ which had been picked up to go along with it might now be in limbo. He was asked about them as well, and Reilly stated that “I haven’t ruled it out. We don’t have a specific property today but we’re open to it.” That vague of a statement should tell anyone who was looking forward to them to likely not hold their breaths.
