Sony is working overtime to ensure that the Spider-Man portion of the Marvel Universe stays cinematically active under their watch. They’ve got the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ produced in conjunction with Marvel Studios for the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe, and just a few weeks ago we learned that Tom Hardy will be starring in a solo Venom film.
Today, from a report by THR, comes word that a second Spider-Man spin-off film will focus on the two characters Black Cat and Silver Sable, and the movie will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The film, ‘Silver and Black,’ will reportedly start shooting this Fall and may have an October 2018 release date, although the initial THR report may have confused this with the release date for ‘Venom,’ which is currently set for an October 5, 2018 premiere.
Prince-Bythewood is likely best known to movie-goers as the writer and director of the film ‘The Secret Life of Bees.’ She also wrote the screenplay and directed the 2000 film ‘Love and Basketball,’ as well as co-creating the Fox TV crime drama ‘Shots Fired’ and is directing the pilot of the upcoming Freeform TV series (and fellow Marvel property) ‘Cloak & Dagger.
Besides helming the project, Prince-Bythewood is said to be rewriting the script for ‘Silver Sable and Black Cat’. You may recall, the original script was penned by Lisa Joy who is also the executive producer of ‘Westworld’ and has written not only on that series but also ‘Burn Notice’ and ‘Pushing Daisies.’ The script then passed to ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ scribe Chris Yost. Prince-Bythwood will now put her spin on the feature.
Neither Silver Sable, a mercenary for hire, nor Black Cat, a burglar and romantic interest for Peter Parker, have appeared in their full forms in Spider-Man movies as of yet. A character bearing Black Cat’s real name, Felicia Hardy (played by Felicity Jones (‘Rogue One’)), had a small part in ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ but was not utilized as the full version of the character.
Kudos to Sony for handing the helming reigns of this female led superhero film! What are your thoughts on their choice and who would you like to see in the lead roles? Give us your thoughts below!
‘Silver and Black’ may be shooting for an October 2018 theatrical release.
