tom-hardy-venomThe first film in Sony’s new non-Spider-Man Cinematic Universe is ‘Venom‘ and now it’s being reported that Tom Hardy (‘Mad Max: Fury Road’,’The Revenant’) is set for the starring role!  This won’t be Hardy’s first work in the world of comics as he previously played Bane in DC and Warner Brother’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’

The goal of this movie is to kick off a new cinematic universe using characters who would be associated with The Wallcrawler with a second entree planned to feature Black Cat and Silver Sable. For many fans, it seems like the perfect way for Sony to screw up their deal with Marvel Studios after finally having what looks like something that can print money on their hands with ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’

You can’t blame Sony Pictures for wanting to use all of these great heroes and villains that they can’t seem to get right, but hopefully this time around they can make them work. Without Peter Parker that is. Director Ruben Fleischer (‘Zombieland’) will be working off a script written by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg and he knows how to make a great movie. Since these are hinted at being R-Rated, we can potentially see some great stories being told that are a little more violent then what they could previously give us with Spidey.

We’ll see how much input producers Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach have this time around.

We don’t know much about the film but do know that he won’t have gotten the suit from Spider-Man if this is a stand-alone universe. I’m wondering what that will mean for this take on the character. His hatred for Parker is so rooted into the Venom persona when Eddie Brock has the symbiote that it almost feels like someone else might be wearing it for this outing.

‘Venom’ will be swinging into theaters everywhere on October 5th, 2018!
