Ridley Scott recently revealed that he had quite a few ‘Alien’ sequels in mind after ‘Alien: Covenant‘ though now appears to be pulling back from that line of thought with only two potentials in the works. Not only that, but he had a bit to say about the shortcomings of ‘Prometheus’ and likely audience distaste could have been a factor in why we’re getting fewer films. On the one hand, it is sad that there will be less of Scott’s take on the ‘Alien’ franchise but it ‘s nice to know that he is willing to listen to fans and adapt accordingly.

While four more ‘Alien’ movies were originally planned when he was recently asked about the number that looks to have changed as his response:

“I don’t know. [I’ll make] maybe two more [films], or maybe one more, I don’t know.”

To be fair, Scott is 79-years-old and has multiple non-Alien films still on his plate. While it is sad to say there is only so much he can still do. Thankfully, he is passionate about his work and loves doing it, so retirement doesn’t appear to be something he wants to do. As to when the next installment could be filmed though?

“I’ll probably be filming it within a year. It’ll be out within a year and nine months. It’s weird when you’re writing, doing, planning, thinking about franchises, it’s amazing how it opens up and starts to evolve.”

We won’t have quite a wait this time around. Early previews of ‘Alien: Covenant’ have been mixed and I sincerely hope that he has captured the magic from his first film. After ‘Prometheus’ a lot of fans are hesitant to be fully invested. While I thought the plot was interesting and the movie itself beautiful; the pacing, characters making bad decisions, and lack of Xenomorphs were all huge detractors.

Speaking of ‘Prometheus’ though and the consensus of viewers not enjoying it:

“It went straight up there, and we discovered from it that [the fans] were really frustrated. They wanted to see more of the original [monster], and I thought he was definitely cooked, with an orange in his mouth. So I thought: ‘Wow, OK, I’m wrong’… The fans, in a funny kind of way – they’re not the final word – but they are the reflection of your doubts about something, and then you realize ‘I was wrong’ or ‘I was right’. I think that’s where it comes in. I think you’re not sensible if you don’t actually take [the fans’ reaction] into account.”

There was a slew of problems with the film, but that sums up quite a bit of the frustration that was felt. I hope that the characters making horrible decisions aren’t going to be one of the ones that pop up again here.

Are you looking forward to ‘Alien: Covenant’? Do you think that the lack of interest in ‘Prometheus’ might be what has cut Scott’s plans for the ‘Alien’ franchise short? Share your thoughts below!
