Captain-Marvel-Helmet

Five years ago, Carol Danvers dropped the code name and skimpy costume of Ms. Marvel to become Captain Marvel, adopting a new fully-covered, military-influenced uniform.  The move seemed intended to make the character more independent (she was originally a spin-off from a male hero named Captain Marvel) and perhaps even more importantly, more palatable to a potential female actor to want to portray in a film.

Now Brie Larson is set to make her debut as Carol Danvers in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ on May 4, 2018 before swooping into her own solo film on March 8, 2018.  Fans have wondered how her character will be depicted on the big screen and now it seems we have an idea.

Marvel hosted an “open house” for members of the press and presented them with concept art for the Captain’s film look.  As in the case with most of their film interpretations, Carol’s costume is very similar to her comic book uniform, just a bit more armored, with some comparing it to the Christian Bale Batman costume as well as Chris Evans’ Captain America uniform(s).  Instead of her signature sash, she seems to sport a utility belt.

It is said to follow the color scheme from the comics and includes her signature eight-pointed star chest emblem.

NOT included is the metal helmet she sometimes wears in the comics.  This helmet materializes when she needs it, including when she flies into space.  That doesn’t mean it won’t appear, but think about it– Evans’ Cap, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki almost never wear their helmets or masks.  Wouldn’t want to obscure those matinee idol looks, right?  Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Anthony Mackie’s Falcon were both given less obtrusive sunglasses/goggles even though the comic book versions of their characters have always sported traditional masks.  Perhaps like Iron Man’s and Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt), her helmet will simply pop up when she needs it.  Then again, it may not be there at all.

Also altered apparently is her hair.  As Ms. Marvel, Carol usually sported long flowing blonde hair.  When she adopted the Captain Marvel guise, she chopped it off into a “fauxhawk.”  (Although like the sash around her waist, its length varied depending on the artist.)  The “fauxhawk” style has more recently been modified into a simpler look, still short and sleek but less edgy.

It seems like only a matter of time before these pictures will be released to the public, so check back later for more.

What do you think?  Which costume would you prefer?
