the last jedi rey

One of the big questions surrounding Rey in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is who her parents are and while that will be addressed in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘, they might not be confirmed. Rumors have swirled from every area of being Luke Skywalker‘s daughter to Kylo Ren’s sister to even a descendent of Obi-Wan Kenobi or Emperor Palpatine. It sounds like that the upcoming film will tease who her parents are, but it isn’t clear if we’ll get an actual acknowledgment its really them.

Here’s the snippet from an interview that director Rian Johnson had on Good Morning America where the topic came up:

While he apparently doesn’t want to talk about the subject, he finally does cave and says that “It’s something that’s going to be addressed in the movie.” He was pushed a bit more and almost said something of importance when responding that “It depends on – I can’t say. I was about to say something. You almost got me!”

He reiterated:

“It will absolutely be addressed in the movie. It’s tough because this is the other element of the secrecy of it all. There are lots of surprises in this movie. There [are] lots of twists and turns, and I really want people to experience those when they see the movie for the first time. How we address that and how you feel about it and what happens with that is one of them.”

So yes, we’re going to get some kind of an answer, but it sounds like it will be incomplete, vague, or misleading. This line of thought goes a bit with what Daisy Ridley had to say about it as she was asked during Star Wars Celebration and stated:

“The one thing I have seen because I did some ADR last week and saw a clip of something that I didn’t know was going to happen in it. I was like ‘Oh, wow. Okay.’ I think quite a few questions that people have are answered in this.””

For those unfamiliar with ADR, it stands for “automatic dialogue replacement, or looping.” This is likely a scene she doesn’t appear in but will be doing voiceover work for and may have just learned what Johnson was talking about herself.

Who do you think is going to end up being Rey’s parents in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi?’ What are your thoughts on how LucasFilm is teasing this part of the story arc? Share your thoughts below!
