Jude Law has been confirmed to be playing a young Dumbledore in the sequel to ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’.

“Law will portray Dumbledore long before the iconic wizard became the Headmaster at Hogwarts, as he has been known in the Harry Potterbooks and movies. We meet him decades earlier when Dumbledore is still serving as the wizarding school’s Transfiguration professor. He is also a contemporary of Gellert Grindelwald, the charismatic dark wizard who believes wizards are superior to Muggles and No-Majs.”

Grindelwald will be played by Johnny Depp and the new film will set up the rivalry between the two.  J.K. Rowling, who is scripting all the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ films, revealed that she plans to explore Dumbledore’s sexuality in the new films.  The script is also said to “move deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt Scamander and our other heroes have to decide on their allegiances.”

David Yates, who directed the last film and is returning for this one, said in a statement:

“Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him. I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”

Dumbledore was previously played by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies.

The second ‘Fantastic Beasts’ is scheduled for release on November 16, 2018.  The first film, which came out last winter, made $813 million worldwide.  The majority of the cast, including Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, plus Ezra Miller, Katherine Waterston, Allison Sudol, and more are expected to return.

What do you think of Jude Law’s casting?  Will he make a good young Dumbledore?
