While True Believers welcomed Robbie Reyes as the Ghost Rider of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ managed to hint at the former Spirit of Vengeance host this season. Due to his appearance in ‘The Good Samaritan’ and some interesting things in the background of ‘Lockup’, many assumed that the previous flame-headed hero was actually Johnny Blaze despite never receiving any official confirmation that that was the case. And unfortunately, we shouldn’t be holding out for those answers any time soon.

In a recent interview with IGN, executive producer Jeffrey Bell revealed that there are currently no plans to expand any further on the Ghost Rider mythology than has already been explored. On top of that, he also doused any flicker of hope there was for Reyes and Blaze to reunite on the show for a Ghost Rider team up somewhere down the line. Though it may technically be possible for the two characters meet again, there can be only one Ghost Rider at a time:

“There is a tradition within the comics that there’s been many Ghost Riders and our take on that was they’re not simultaneously a tribe of Ghost Riders, but that it’s passed. The Spirit of Vengeance is passed from person to person. In that respect, at least our intention was that the Spirit of Vengeance was passed from one person to another, and who passed that on, there are suggestions within the storytelling … That’s as far as we’re going to take that part.”

If you were paying close attention, this actually lines up with what we’ve seen so far in this season of the ABC superhero drama. When the Spirit of Vengeance inhabits Mack in ‘Deals With Our Devils’, it leaves Robbie in order for a scorned Agent Mackenzie to be imbued with the fiery powers of the Rider. But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s still a bit of a bummer that we won’t officially get to see Johnny Blaze as Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At least, not in the near future. However, there is some solace in the fact that A.) Johnny Blaze basically exists in the MCU and B.) we apparently haven’t seen the last of Robbie Reyes. Now we’ll just have to patiently wait until the day comes when vengeance rides again.

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ starring Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, and Henry Simmons airs on Tuesdays at 10:00pm EST on ABC.
