X-Force Deadpool 2

Following the success of the highly-anticipated and long-awaited film, it would seem that 20th Century Fox is firmly in the ‘Deadpool’ business now. Defying expectations by earning critical acclaim and over $700 million would certainly do that for a franchise. But the next installment of the Mer with a Mouth’s adventures aren’t only going to serve as a continuation of his story, but also a launching pad for other projects as well.

While speaking to Collider earlier this week, ‘Deadpool 2’ writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese revealed that they are laying the foundation for ‘X-Force’ with their next film starring Wade Wilson. After all, the character has a long history with the team and fellow mutants Cable and Domino, who are both said to be appearing in the sequel. However, they are committed to delivering a Deadpool movie first and foremost:

Rhett Reese: There is a responsibility we have to the X-Force universe, and I do think we will not disappoint the fans going into Deadpool 2 and then setting up X-Force and beyond.

Paul Wernick: We never want to let the tail wag the dog. We want to tell the best Deadpool story we can. But I do think we have a responsibility to think about a larger universe in the way that Marvel does and start to put pieces in place. Some of these movies feel overstuffed and almost choking with the need to set up eighteen different things that pay off down the road, and we want to avoid that responsibility to the extent that it hurts us. We want to hint at things, we want to plan some characters, and we want to make some nods, but we’re very, very cognizant about making sure that Deadpool is above all a Deadpool movie.

Reese: Its purpose is not to set up X-Force. It will likely set up X-Force, but the drive of the movie won’t be our eyes on Movie 3.

The most interesting part of this has to be the “beyond” portion of Resse’s comments. Does this mean that they could be setting the stage for ‘New Mutants’ as well? Brianna Hildebrand’s Teenage Negasonic Warhead is rumored to make a comeback for the upcoming sequel directed by David Leitch. Judging by her uniform in the first movie, she could be a part of writer/director Josh Boone’s teen mutant team as well, so it would make sense for Wade to mention the youngsters in passing while breaking the fourth wall. Or could they be involved in a larger capacity? Considering that the creative team is still working out the details, we’re probably going to have to wait a while before we get the answer to that.

But in the meantime, what do you think about Reese and Wernick’s comments about ‘Deadpool 2’? Are you excited abut the 2018 film? How do you think ‘X-Force’ and ‘New Mutants’ will factor into the plot? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments.
