wonder-woman

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains information that may be considered SPOILERS for ‘Wonder Woman’ so proceed with caution.

The trailers for ‘Wonder Woman’ have been a mix of lush scenery (during the Paradise Island sequences) and gritty battlefield action.  And although some glimpses of the villains appeared, it has never been made clear just who they are!  But French magazine  Studio Ciné Live has spilled that the main antagonist is…

Ares the god of war.  This should come as no surprise, as Ares is arguably Wonder Woman’s most powerful foe and the fact that the movie is set during World War I, a time period that would be of interest to this character.  Presumably, this is who Danny Huston is portraying.

According to a statement in the magazine, Chris Pine explained his character thusly: “I play a pilot who works for the Allies and spies on the Germans without their knowledge. My character steals a notebook filled with scientific formulas in an Ottoman base, he steals a plane but is shot down in the open sea. ”

One of these scientific formulas is for a deadly gas capable of wiping out humanity.  Humanity is the creation of Zeus, Ares father and sworn enemy.  Ares is determined to annihilate humanity as revenge against Zeus…

Who is already dead.  (I warned you!)

“Why Did Zeus create the Amazons? Ares is one of the biggest hits in the world. To restore harmony between them, Zeus created the Amazons that Ares reduced to slavery. The Amazons revolt with the help of Zeus, who will die of the hand of his son having had time to find Themyscira, their haven of peace. (…) Diana Prince becomes Wonder Woman by helping Steve Trevor and a squad of proud arm-in-law in search of one who wants to wipe humanity off the map with deadly gas.”

Uh… this is translated (by my computer) from French.  I think “Ares is one of the biggest hits” is supposed to be “threats” or something like that.  “Arm-in-law” is likely supposed to be brothers-in-arms.  But you get the point.

One thing that does not need translating are these images from the magazine:

There is still the question of the female villain played by Elena Anaya, but it had previously been rumored that she was playing Doctor Poison and the reference to poison gas would seem to support that.
