Fresh on the heels of the Golden Globe nomination for ‘Deadpool,’ Ryan Reynolds is on the hunt for Wolverine, as he is clearly not yet ready for his buddy Hugh Jackman to retire the claws, at least not until they had had a chance for their super-hero alter egos to spar together on the big screen. While speaking recently with Variety about the nomination, Reynolds was very keen about the idea of a ‘Wolverine/Deadpool’ movie with Jackman back as the clawed mutant, especially since he and Jackman have such a fun relationship both on and off-screen. In his words:
“I would love to play Deadpool for as long as they would let me play Deadpool. We have outlines and stories for a number of different films….I have no idea if I can change his [Jackman’s] mind. It’s the audience: I would exclusively exploit that relationship to get Hugh back for another one.”
Jackman, however, is clearly on the fence, especially after all the noise he has made recently about how ‘Logan’ is his final turn as the character:
“I’m hesitating because I could totally see how that’s the perfect fit. But the timing may be wrong.”
Even if Jackman were interested, right now is clearly not the time to talk about it, as he would be hurting the hype for ‘Logan’ if he were to reveal any considerations of coming back to play Wolverine even one more time post-‘Logan,’ as the biggest audience draw for ‘Logan’ is the whole ‘This is the last time you’ll see Jackman as Wolverine’ bit. As for Reynolds, he could be too busy already for any kind of movie with Wolverine anyway as he is already prepping ‘Deadpool 2’ and making plans for ‘Deadpool 3’ which rumor has it will start setting up the ‘X-Force’ storyline, as apparently all of 20th Century Fox’s superhero eggs are in the ‘Deadpool’ basket nowadays since ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ left that franchise dead in the water and ‘Logan’ will be the final film for Wolverine (and I am sure Reynolds appreciates the irony of his new situation, being the priority superhero for the studio).
What do you think? Do you want Jackman to come back to play Wolverine again in a ‘Deadpool’ movie? Or would you rather they use that movie to introduce a new actor as Wolverine? Share your thoughts on the idea in the comments below!
