“After ten thousand years I’m free!”

The official twitter account for the upcoming ‘Power Rangers’ movie was once again been taken over for the day by Rita Repulsa, and as was the case with the last day of #RepulsaTakesOver tweets, the day was marked by the release of a new photo of the Empress of Evil as featured in the new film.

While both of the #RepulsaTakesOver days have been kicked off with a new photo of the character, there has been a notable difference in the two. The first, released on November 28, marked our first real look at the full costume, including an updated version of Rita’s iconic staff, despite her fleeting inclusion in the trailer and the fact that hers was the first of the redesigns to be revealed several months ago. That picture, however, was clearly a somewhat generic publicity photo. By contrast, the one posted today looks to be a still from the film itself. You can find the tweet included below:

The original Rita Repulsa was nothing if not an extremely over the top presence on the screen. While it remains to be seen whether or not the Elizabeth Banks version of the character will strike a similar chord, the content of the #RepulsaTakesOver tweets certainly suggests that some of that characterization will remain intact. In fact, assuming that the tweets are representative of Rita’s portrayal in rebooted continuity of the film, that would make it one of the few substantial previews we’ve have of the film’s characterization. Aside from Rita herself, the closest we’ve come to getting any sense of how the film will handle its characters has come primarily from the trailer, which seemed more interested in contrasting itself with the original series than in getting into any particular detail.

Helmed by ‘Project Almanac’ director Dean Israelite, ‘Power Rangers’ stars Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Dacre Montgomery, Elizabeth Banks, Bill Hader, and Bryan Cranston. The film is due to hit theaters on March 24, 2017.
