While there has yet to be a truly successful (I’m talking about both commercial and critical success domestically) video game movie, Hollywood clearly has no problem continuing to try. Next month will be the latest attempt when we get the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ film, but far more interesting to me is the ‘Minecraft’ movie which is set to hit theaters on May 25th 2019. ‘Minecraft’ is about as far away from a traditional video game as you can get, one could almost say it is like Legos for video games, in that you can sit back and build whatever world you would like, partake in whatever experience you would like, and the world is simple enough that it will allow you to do so. In which case, you could almost see why Hollywood would be all over a ‘Minecraft’ movie, as the ‘Lego Movie’ did phenomenally well, partly because it offered the filmmakers so many options and so few restrictions story-wise, something the ‘Minecraft’ movie could also take advantage of.

With all of that in mind, it is no wonder that the next big get for the film is a major leading man, hence why they are going after Steve Carell, as the man has proven himself to have great appeal with families, especially after the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise did so well in theaters. The real question now is whether the ‘Minecraft’ film is still going to be live-action or whether it will become an animated film, either of which I think will work fine with Carell’s talents, though the animated version might let him really open up with his voice-work should he get the role.

What do you think about Steve Carell starring in the ‘Minecraft’ movie? Do you see potential there? Or do you think this might end up being too high concept a film to make? Share your opinions in the comments below!
