New York Comic Con has barely begun and already Fox is making a full court press to promote the upcoming third installment of the rebooted ‘Planet of the Apes’ franchise: ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’. In advance of a variety of promotional events due to take place during the convention (including an exclusive screening of behind the scenes footage and a Q&A session with Andy Serkis), the studio has released a teaser for the film.

The teaser (included below) is brief, featuring a reprise of Caesar’s closing dialogue from 2014’s ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ as his face emerges from the snow.

Additionally, an official synopsis has been released, which expands on what we can expect from the film’s plot (beyond what was already made clear from the title and the conclusion of the previous film). Unlike ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’, which included a significant narrative jump from ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’, ‘War’ follows very closely on the heels of the previous film. The official synopsis is as follows:

In ‘War for the Planet of the Apes,’ the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

Helmed by returning director Matt Reeves, ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Judy Greer, Karin Konoval, Amiah Miller, and Terry Notary. The movie will be in theaters on July 14, 2017.
