True Believers had many questions following ‘Captain America: Civil War’. Though the majority of them had to do with the futures of heroes such as Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Spider-Man, and the Winter Soldier, many (including General Thunderbolt Ross) wondered where Thor and Bruce Banner were during all of this. ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ director Taika Waititi answered those queries at this year’s San Diego Comic Con with a special mockumentary that showed the Asgardian Avenger living in Australia with a roommate named Darryl Jacobson. Though fans believed this to be a tongue-in-cheek gag for the audience in Hall H (and eventually, the internet), it sounds like there are bigger plans for Darryl in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after all.
During a recent interview with IGN to promote the home release of his latest film ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’, Waititi hinted that Darryl might factor into future MCU events. While he was pretty tight-lipped about details, the filmmaker said just enough to make us wonder:
“Thor briefly rented a room in a flat in Australia after the Ultron debacle. Just to get some downtime – to get away from The Avengers, to get away from America. So he had a little downtime in Australian. And he met this guy Darryl and they shared a flat together. So that’s Darryl. I think you probably could see him again. There may be other little pieces of that thing that everyone saw that may just be a small part of a bigger thing.”
My first instinct is to think that Waititi is just kidding around. There’s no way that the ‘Team Thor’ video is MCU canon. I could definitely see Darryl (who is played by Daley Pearson) making a cameo appearance as an Easter egg in the upcoming Phase Three film, but that’s really the extent of it. Then again, you never really know what Marvel or their stable of amazingly talented filmmakers will bring to these films next. I mean, James Gunn did manage to fit Ego the Living Planet into ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ and made him Star-Lord’s father. Either way, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ is going to be really interesting.
Are you excited about the possibility that we may see Thor and Darryl reunited on the big screen? How do you think Odinson’s roommate will factor into the hero’s third solo adventure? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
