deathstroke vs deadpool

Rob Liefeld is not happy about all of the people commenting on the similarities between Deadpool and Deathstroke, nor the idea that Deadpool is a rip-off of the latter, especially since Liefeld is the one who created Deadpool decades ago. You have to admit though, the timing of it all is sketchy, especially since technically speaking Deathstroke appeared in DC comics first in 1980, and then 11 years later Deadpool showed up in Marvel comics, and Liefeld had written fro Deathstroke. Aside from the names both having some form of “death” in them, there is also the similarities between the names of their real identities, Wade Wilson and Slade Wilson, which is just too coincidental to believe it was not on purpose.

However, it seems Rob Liefeld is ready to refute all of these claims, which he does in true Deadpool style, i.e. with humor, insanity, passion and energy in the video below. Using toys of both Deathstroke and Deadpool, Liefeld points out the 5 “key” differences between the two characters, his biggest points being one is an old man and one is an ugly man, and one is wearing orange and blue while the other is wearing black and red. He also points out that Deathstroke is kind of a hulking soldier type figure, while Deadpool is more akin to a lithe ninja assassin mercenary, both of which are good points. Check out the hilarious video for yourself below:

The real question, of course, is whether or not any of this is going to matter to audiences in the future, especially once ‘Deathstroke’ makes his first cinematic appearance in the solo ‘Batman’ movie Ben Affleck is coming out with. Over the years the characters have evolved a lot, and if you did not know their names, you might not even be aware of their similarities, which is what I think the filmmakers are banking on, as when the ‘Batman’ film comes out, there will most likely already be another ‘Deadpool’ film out, and the last thing either company wants if for audiences to think ‘Deadpool’ is the villain in the ‘Batman’ film.

What are your thoughts here? Are you offended that Liefeld is trying to tell us he did not rip off Deathstroke? Do you think all the similarities are pure coincidence? Do you think any of this even matters anymore since the characters are so different now? Share your opinions on the matter in the comments below!
