Labor Day weekend 2016 marked the 30th Anniversary of Dragon Con, Atlanta’s biggest pop culture convention. Dragon Con is the southern destination for American cosplayers and that’s never more obvious than during its Saturday morning parade. Words can’t really describe it, so I took pictures.
The parade closes off the streets of downtown Atlanta so that the only traffic comes in the form of familiar rides. Each car is typically accompanied by similarly themed pedestrians. You’ll find Doc Brown walking around the Delorean and Adam West look-alikes trying to keep up with the Batmobile. Floats from local geek favorites like Medieval Times and the haunted house Netherworld are also featured, but the bulk of the Dragon Con parade are made up of those who started it: cosplayers.
There was a great diversity of cosplay on display, but I gotta say…the Bobba Fetts, Harley Quinns, and Deadpools represented most. They were everywhere, and rarely boring. Most people put their own spin on the characters from creative bounty hunter pain jobs to ambitious mallet sizes. My favorite may have been the Deadpool posing below with Harley who I later saw rapping with folks dressed as the cast of ‘Hamilton.’
If you attended Dragon Con this year, no doubt you have loads of pictures of your own. Let us know in the comments where to check them out!
