Captain-America-X-Men

With the success of bringing Spider-Man into the MCU (though to be fair, that success cannot truly be judged until the solo ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming‘ film, despite the character doing well in ‘Civil War), fans are now clamoring for Fox and Marvel to work out a deal to bring the ‘X-Men’ (and the ‘Fantastic Four’ for that matter) into the MCU proper. Especially with the recent failure of ‘Fantastic Four‘ and the disappointing returns of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse,’ it seems the time is ripe for Fox to finally make a deal with Marvel and start cashing in on the MCU train. And what better time to bring everyone together than with the massive ‘Infinity War’ storyline fast approaching in the MCU.

Unfortunately, though, that does not seem to be the case.  During a recent interview with ComicBook.com to promote the Blu-Ray release of ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ Joe Russo was asked about a deal with Fox for the ‘X-Men’ characters, and his response is not very reassuring for fans:

“As far as we know, right now there isn’t talk regarding the X-Men. I don’t know if behind-the-scenes there were conversations or if there are conversations happening but we certainly haven’t heard of any… Sony and Marvel had a relationship through Kevin [Feige] and Amy [Pascal], and through us and Amy. That’s really how Spider-Man came about. It requires a certain alchemy and a very special situation for studios to share properties.

“There was not talk on Civil War about the X-Men.”

Of course, even if talks were taking place, Joe Russo would not be allowed to discuss it with the press, and most likely would be told by Marvel to straight up deny any rumors so if it does happen it would be a welcome surprise to the fans. However, he does have a point about the kind of happy coincidences that led to Spider-Man returning to the MCU, as the Russo’s had a relationship with Sony due to their involvement in ‘Community’ and other Sony projects, and Kevin Feige had an existing relationship with Amy Pascal as well, all of which led to negotiations that might not have occurred has those relationships not existing. Marvel and Fox’s relationship has not been great over the years (almost icy in some regards) and it is hard to imagine them coming to terms for the characters anytime soon.
