With ‘Suicide Squad‘ dropping this weekend, we’ve finally learned a bit more about Jared Leto‘s gifts to fellow cast members. For those unfamiliar with the gifts there was a live rat and a dead pig counted in what we know were passed out and apparently there were even more. Now the actor who is taking on the role of one of the most iconic villains of all time is opening up a bit more on his motivations behind the gifts.
Previously Leto stated:
“I did a lot of things to create a dynamic to create an element of surprise, a spontaneity and to really break down any kind of walls that may be there. The Joker is somebody who doesn’t really respect things like personal space or boundaries.”
As someone who was clearly getting into his role on and off set, these gifts were actually helping Leto get into the mindset of not only his character but how he would interact with the other actors on screen. He shared his reasoning in a recent interview on Fox 5 DC:
“It was interesting to do, because The Joker loves to play games, he loves to manipulate, and that was part of the reason to do that. When you do give a gift to someone, even in real life, you think about, ‘What do I get them?,’ you think about who that person is to you, what would they like? So that immediately started to be really good homework for me. What do I give Deadshot? What’s my relationship with Deadshot? I gave Deadshot a briefcase full of bullets. It was kind of a message, it was kind of a threat, it was kind of a reminder. I wrote every character a note — a poem. What it did was that it started me on a journey into thinking what these people are, and it was a lot of fun.”
Apparently, though it wasn’t all just gag gifts that were sent out as we hadn’t heard about some of the nicer ones out there:
“I did give some nice gifts as well, but people don’t talk about that. And by the way, some of the strange ones aren’t even true. I’m not gonna say what’s true or what’s not, but the press love to have fun with it. There were some crazier ones and some nicer ones that I gave. I did give cupcakes.”
I’m curious as to which of the stranger ones aren’t true but I guess we’ll never know. With all of the craziness that was floating about from Leto’s fun take on acting though would you truly feel safe in eating one of those cupcakes? I know that I wouldn’t have.
Honestly, I can’t wait to see what kind of gifts he gives out to Affleck when the stand-alone Batman movie ends up being filmed.
