During the Marvel Studios panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2′ director James Gunn revealed the identity of Peter Quill’s father. This has been an ongoing mystery for True Believers since the first film debuted in 2014. But in Hall H last week, not only was it announced that Kurt Russell would be playing the father of Chris Pratt’s character in the upcoming Phase Three film, but the legendary actor would be playing Ego the Living Planet. So doesn’t a massive revelation like this constitute as a huge spoiler? Not necessarily.

In a recent Facebook post, Gunn shared that this business with Ego and Star-Lord isn’t as spoilerish as one would think. Even though he would have preferred to keep all details regarding the movie a secret, nothing unveiled at SDCC will diminish a fan’s enjoyment of the highly anticipated sequel:

“I get it. If we lived in a perfect world, I wouldn’t tell you ANYTHING before you walked in to see ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’. I wouldn’t tell you Groot was now Baby Groot, I wouldn’t tell you Mantis was in the movie, I wouldn’t say that Ayesha and Taserface are our antagonists, that Yondu and Nebula have incredibly important roles in the film, nor would I tell you that Quill’s father is Ego the Living Planet. However, the world is imperfect.

Knowing who Quill’s father is will not diminish your enjoyment of the film in any way. The story is not built to be a shocking twist in the same way Luke’s father was Darth, Soylent Green was people, Rosebud was a sled, or that that pretty woman from ‘Crying Game’ had a penis (I guess I should have said spoilers before all that). Ego is the emotional center of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ from the beginning to the end, and is not a twist.

And believe me – there are many, many more surprises we still have in store for you from Vol. 2 – hopefully the biggest of which is how much you’ll love the movie itself. Because, to me, that’s the only twist that matters.”

Ever since Ego was announced as Star-Lord’s father, my first instinct wasn’t to question why they shared that information with us prior to the movie’s release. I wanted to know how the hell a planet takes a human form, travels to Earth, and gets busy. I still want to know that! And it looks like that answer is being kept for the actual movie, so as Gunn says, there are still more surprises on the way. While we wait to find out what they are, let us know what you think about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ in the comments below.
