game-of-thrones

Winter is coming and your DVR is about to become a lot freer.  HBO has officially announced that ‘Game of Thrones’ is coming to an end with Season 8.  Season 6 just wrapped and it was previously announced that Season 7, which will air next year will consist of only seven episodes.  After that, fans can look forward to one more season in 2018, with an undetermined number of episodes.  As many know, the show is based on George R.R. Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice & Fire’ novels, but the show has not only caught up to the most recently published book, but moved further into the narrative.  That may– or may NOT– have something to do with the show winding up its award-winning run.  Or maybe the old adage “All good things must come to an end” is simply kicking in.

HBO’s new  Programming President Casey Bloys made the announcement, stating:

“Yes, I think [showrunners, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff] have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do.  If I could get them to do more, I would take 10 seasons, but we want to take their lead with what they could do and what the best version of the show is.”

‘Game of Thrones’ is one of the most popular and buzz-worthy shows on TV right now, so it’s a bit surprising that the decision has been made to pull the plug while it’s still going strong.  There has been talk of a spinoff show, but who knows how that will work out.

Bloys made mention of this:

“We’ve talked about it.  It’s not something I’m opposed to but it has to make sense creatively. I’m not sure the guys can wrap their heads around it when they are about to start production. We’re open to it; the guys aren’t opposed to it but there’s no concrete plans right now.”

Spinoffs can be dicey.  Many times they flop pretty hard, but every so often there’s a ‘Better Call Saul’ that actually manages to live up to its parent program.  Or ‘The Flash’ that surpasses the popularity of the show from which it was spun, in this case ‘Arrow’.

What do you think?  Are you upset that ‘GoT’ is ending?  Are you interested in a spinoff?  If so, what characters would you like to see star in it?
