Riri-Williams-Iron-Man

We just reported that Marvel was introducing a new African American female Iron Man, Riri Williams, a 15 year-old prodigy who is already enrolled at MIT who builds her own suit out of discarded scraps of Tony Stark’s old suits of armor and who will succeed Stark in the role.  (Like Thor, it appears she will be keeping the male moniker for currently-unknown reasons.)

The Marvel Universe is presently undergoing another huge shake-up with ‘Civil War II’ and the recent announcement of a brand new status quo that will spin out of that story, so news is trickling out slowly (before SDCC, anyway).  But we do know that Williams will take over the ‘Invincible Iron Man’ comic book following ‘Civil War II’ and that she will have a connection to Stark.

Stefano Caselli, who illustrates the ‘Invincible Iron Man’ series, has released a new piece of artwork showing Williams’ new armor:

It’s unknown if there will be any additional embellishments.  It’s noticeable that the suit is missing the arc light in the chest.  Then again, presumably Williams won’t suffer a similar injury and require it to keep her alive.

Though slim in design, the suit is devoid of any distinguishing female details including breasts.  The pelvic area is slightly feminine-looking, though.  Just as James Rhodes took over as Iron Man in the 80s but continued to masquerade as the same person as Stark, it looks like Williams may be doing the same.  Guess we’ll have to wait until Riri Williams debuts as Iron Man to get the full scoop.

One interesting part of the report is that Williams will draw the attention of Stark and War Machine.  War Machine’s death was the catalyst for ‘Civil War II’.  This teases that either Rhodey returns or there will be a new character in the armor.

A release date for the new ‘Iron Man’ has yet to be announced.
