‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ has completed primary filming and the film is slated for release this winter. But so far, nearly everything about the film has been kept under wraps. But the movie has landed the cover of ‘Entertainment Weekly’ and with that, loads of new information has now become available, including the names of the principle cast along with some insight into their roles in this story.
Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones)
As we’ve long known, Jones plays Jyn Erso, the main protagonist of ‘Rogue One’. As has been evident in the trailers, Jyn is a wild card and seems to take the label of “Rebel” quite literally. Just how much of a Rebel is she? It has now been revealed that she agrees to help the Rebels steal the Deathstar’s blueprints in exchange for a commuted sentence for crimes she has perpetrated against the Alliance.
Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna)
There may be a conflict between Jyn Erso and Captain Cassian Andor as Andor is described as “by-the-book Rebel intelligence officer” with loads of experience.
Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen)
It was previously stated that The Force and Jedi do not factor into this movie, as the Jedi are decimated following the events of the prequels. Chirrut Imwe, therefore, is not a Jedi but has dedicated his life to their teachings and way of life. He is described as having “used his spirituality to overcome his blindness and become a formidable warrior.” Hmmm… Remember in ‘A New Hope’, when Obi-Wan made Luke practice using his lightsaber with the helmet’s blast shield covering his eyes? Chirrut Imwe may not be a full-blown Jedi, but it sounds like he might have some potential.
Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen)
Baze Malbus is described as not being spiritual at all, instead being a man of action, with a propensity for heavy machinery. But opposites attract. Baze Malbus serves as Chirrut Imwe’s protector, “at all costs.” (I’m already picturing the shippers’ hashtags.)
Bodhi Rook (Riz Amed)
Shades of Han Solo, Bodhi Rook is a “hot-headed” pilot, who learned his skill flying cargo ships.
K-2SO (Alan Tudyk)
K2SO will be rendered by CGI but will be voiced by former ‘Serenity’ pilot Alan Tudyk. Director Gareth Edwards describes him as the “antithesis of C-3PO… Chewbacca’s personality in a droid’s body.” So no more prissy cyber British butler. K2SO, like Jyn Erso, is said to be in search of redemption for some dark acts he committed in the past.
Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen)
Mads Mikkelsen plays Jyn Erso’s estranged father. The reason why they’re estranged is unrevealed.
Galen is described as “the galactic version of nuclear pioneer J. Robert Oppenheimer.” Robert Oppenheimer is the Father of the Atomic Bomb, who was later tormented by the mass death and destruction his invention caused. There have been rumors that Galen was the engineer of the Deathstar and that description certainly seems to back that up.
Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn)
Now, bring on the bad guys! Ben Mendelsohn plays the main antagonist of ‘Rogue One’, Director Krennic, who is described as “desperate” to please the Emperor and move up in the ranks of the Empire, by any means necessary.
Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker)
Saw Gerrera is described as “kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists.” He is also described as being brutal and violent, which may cause friction with his fellow Rebels.
Also, Saw Gerrera is one of the only characters who has appeared before. He was a recurring character on ‘The Clone Wars’ animated series and along with his sister Steela, fought alongside Anakin Skywalker. Will this come into play in ‘Rogue One’? We’ll have to wait and see!
Do these descriptions make you more intrigued about ‘Rogue One’?
Directed by Gareth Edwards, ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ flies into theaters on December 16th, 2016.
