guillermo del toro

We know that Guillermo del Toro (‘Crimson Peak‘,’The Strain’) has been working on ‘Carnival Row‘ for quite some time now and Amazon Studios has just picked up a pilot order for the series. Del Toro will be working with fellow ‘Pacific Rim‘ collaborator Travis Beacham as well as Rene Echeverria on bringing this series to live on the small screen. The series itself is set to be brought to us with Amazon Studios working with Legendary TV and is a co-development deal which was initially signed in 2015.

The deal had initially been to bring Beacham’s classic ‘A Killing on Carnival Row’ to life but had three scripts for the project which were to be co-written by Echeverria, del Toro, Beacham, and Peter Cameron. No word if Cameron is still involved with the project.

This is the second time we’re seeing a treatment of this script being developed as New Line had purchased the rights in 2005 where it was shelved after Warner Brothers purchased the studio. Del toro was involved at that time as well with Neil Jordan having played a part in the film’s early development. It even had Tarsem Singh (‘Immortals’) set to direct and wasn’t until 2011 that the movie was officially shelved.

The short and sweet version of what the story will be about is:

A Killing on Carnival Row is set in the future in a city called the Burgue, which looks a lot like 18th Century London. It is inhabited by humans and other creatures, and a serial killer is on the loose.
