GHOST IN THE SHELL

While the thought of a live-action ‘Ghost in the Shell‘ doesn’t sit well with many, I doubt it will hold anyone back from checking out the first shots of the leading duo Scarlett Johansson (‘Captain America: Civil War’,’Avengers: Age of Ultron’) and Pilous Asbæk (‘Lucy’,’The Borgias’) on set and in character! As these are set photos they clearly aren’t as cleaned up as the promotional image above but it does give an idea of what we’ll be seeing in the film.

For those unfamiliar with the storyline, Johansson is tackling the role of the Major. She is a cyborg who leads a task force that stops extremists and threats to her country and has to stop an extremist which wants to destroy all advanced cyber technology. Asbæk is playing Batou and it looks like he’s actually pretty spot-on for the look of his animated counterpart from the anime. He is the Major’s right-hand man and her second in command. There are various theories that Batou has an emotional attachment to the Major and may even love her though it is never expressly explored on page or screen.

You can check out both sets of photos directly at Apple Daily and HKO1.

With the controversy of white washing going on for major actors in the film, there is a lot at stake for the studios. If they can deliver a solid movie I think it will draw in crowds stateside but clearly they are betting on a solid worldwide release on this one and the main casting choices could turn off some Asian nation moviegoers.
