Joss Whedon has excelled at crafting the exploits of well-rounded female characters, most famously on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘, not to mention cult favorites like ‘Firefly‘ and ‘Dollhouse’.  He also struck gold with ‘The Avengers’ featuring Black Widow as one of the main characters, blossoming from her tiny bit role in ‘Iron Man 2’.  But after ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, Whedon opted to depart the Marvel Cinematic Universe, partly due to the rigorous demands of the shared universe format.  But he recently revealed what might tempt him back.

Marvel has female-led ‘Captain Marvel‘ in the works and it seems that a solo ‘Black Widow’ is all but certain at this point.  Whedon reveals that he may be lured back to the MCU if it were to helm a female-driven flick.

“Yeah, of course [I’d be into that].  Although I tend more towards the Jessica Jones-ey kind of stories than the delightful Supergirl stories that my daughter wants.”

That should go without saying, as it was Whedon who fleshed out Black Widow’s dark past, although the tiny glimpses seen in her nightmare visions were more of a tease than any sort of explanation.  And since these tidbits came from Whedon’s imagination, wouldn’t he be the best choice to complete her story?

At any rate, don’t expect him to helm ‘Captain Marvel’ since that probably falls under his description of “delightful Supergirl stories.”

He did offer a bit of insider info on ‘Captain Marvel’ even being on Marvel slate, saying:

“Kevin Feige fought a mighty fight to get her on the schedule. So it’s a start. You could say that should be a middle, but it’s a start.”

Reportedly, Marvel Entertainment okayed ‘Captain Marvel’ in exchange for ‘Inhumans’, but since Marvel Studios broke away from Marvel Entertainment, ‘Inhumans’ has been postponed indefinitely while ‘Captain Marvel’ is due for release on March 8, 2019.

Would you like to see Whedon return to the MCU?  If so, which character(s) would you like to see him take on?
