90s-x-men

If you’ve been wondering where the Fox franchise was set to go after ‘X-Men: Apocalypse,’ then you’ll be happy to hear that Simon Kinberg has announced that it will take place in the 90s! What everyone’s favorite mutants will be doing, who they’ll be up against, and what direction the film will take is still shrouded in mystery. However, many would argue that the 90s era mutants in both comics and on television in cartoon form was the pinnacle of their success so there are plenty of directions that the studio could be taking the team.

Honestly, we know more about ‘Deadpool 2‘, the idea that there will be an ‘X-Force‘ spinoff, and even ‘Wolverine 3‘ at this point than where the core team will be heading. With each trilogy appearing to take place in a specific decade, I have a feeling we’ll be seeing the team spending the majority of the next three films in the 90s. With ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ being the endcap to what ran from ‘X-Men: First Class‘ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past‘ it should be interesting to where they want to take the franchise going forward.

Especially since it looks like they’ll no longer have Huch Jackman showing up as Wolverine.

While Kinberg was uncannily quiet on details he did confirm the time period by simply stating that:

“The next one is set in the ‘90s.”

Maybe this means we’ll finally be seeing some uniforms based on the classic stylings from the time period? Doubtful, but you never know!

With so many key players such as Jubilee, Psylocke, and a new Cyclops, Jean, and Storm being introduced in this film it shouldn’t be too surprising to see them and possibly Colossus from ‘Deadpool’, a more fuzzy Beast showing up with a bald Professor X leading the team. I would hope at least one of these will give us a return of Magneto as a powerful villain and maybe another go with Apocalypse depending how he plays out in this film.

Maybe they’ll take a queue out of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and try to find a way to tie the ‘New Mutants‘ and ‘X-Force’ into the mix for an all out brawl in the final chapter. One can only hope. While a true ‘Age of Apocalypse’ story arc that takes place in the future could be fun, I think a good endcap would truly be bringing a great take on ‘The Dark Phoenix Saga’ to light and ending it with Jean’s passing which leaves Cyclops fully moldable for a follow-up trilogy.

So True Believers, what villains do you think we’ll be seeing in the next film? Do you have a specific X-Men you’d like to see on the team? Share your thoughts below!

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ starring Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Ben Hardy, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Lana Condor, Olivia Munn, and Oscar Isaac opens in theaters on May 27, 2016.
