Adam McKay contributed to the scripts for Marvel Studios’ ‘Ant-Man’ and its upcoming sequel ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’. He was in the running to direct the first film, but walked away from the project. (Peyton Reed ended up making it.) McKay is said to still be on Marvel’s shortlist when it came to upcoming movies, but so far that hasn’t happened. But he will be directing a superhero movie, just for a different studio and publisher.
The ‘Irredeemable’ comic book is published by Indie Boom! Studios and the film is being produced at 20th Century Fox, the same home of the ‘X-Men’ movies, including the very R-rated ‘Deadpool’ so that could be the perfect fit for this project.
‘Irredeemable’ chronicles the exploits of:
“The Plutonian, the world’s greatest superhero until he began heartlessly slaughtering the population of Earth, at least those who defy him. It falls to a superhero group known as the Paradigm to stop his rampage. They were former colleagues of the Plutonian, they’ve all got problems of their own, and none of them is nearly as powerful as the mass-murdering maniac holding the world hostage. In Clarice-Hannibal Lecter fashion, the Paradigm in desperation turns to a famous supervillain for help; it might be the only way to stop the carnage.”
The original comic series ran from 2009-2012 and was written by Peter Waid with art by Peter Krause for the first 24 issues, with Diego Barretto taking over after that. Waid also created the spin-off series ‘Incorruptible’. Waid seems to be quite comfortable exploring the dark side of super heroics, having penned the landmark series ‘Kingdom Come’ and the super villain-centric ‘Empire’.
Tommy Wirkola (‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’) has been tapped to pen the script for ‘Irredeemable’.
Fox already turned the super hero genre upside down with ‘Deadpool’ so this dark interpretation of Superman may be right up their alley.
Are you a fan of ‘Irredeemable’? Are you glad there’s a movie being made? Is McKay a good fit?
