borderlands

It looks like we’re getting another video game adaptation in the near future as Lionsgate has just tapped Aaron Berg (‘Section 6′,’G.I. Joe 3’) to pen the script for ‘Borderlands‘! The movie is set to be based on 2009 smash hit by Gearbox Software. The game itself is a first person shooter that is set in a bit of a dystopian futuristic western. The franchise has sold over 26 million copies since it was initially released and has quite the following.

Not much is known about the plans for the film quite yet but Arad Production will be producing. Early descriptions have it as a bit of a “‘Mad Max’ in space” which really does fit the initial offerings from the video games. The plan is to have it be an R-rated take on the game and fans should be happy to hear that. While it doesn’t need to be full of gore it can be quite violent at times.

With ‘Warcraft‘ and ‘Assassin’s Creed‘ already set for this year and Blizzard Entertainment having multiple films of their franchises in pre-production we might actually be entering a golden age of video game movies. Of course, with their history so far we should be taking this with a grain of salt until they are actually released and have pulled audiences in.

The Arad’s have previously said that:

“Borderlands has a unique story-driven narrative energy and rich multi-dimensional characters that position it to become a singular motion picture event.”

With multiple points of view in the game and a variety of expansions, the property is one that could go a long way depending how they handle it.
