SPOILER ALERT: This article contains potential spoilers for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ so proceed with caution!
Though most folks know Nathan Fillion best for starring in the long-running series ‘Castle’, nerds know him for his numerous genre roles, from Caleb on ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ to Captain Mal Reynolds on ‘Firefly’ to Captain Hammer in ‘Doctor Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog’. He has also provided the voice of Green Lantern in numerous animated films.
Though fans have long wanted to see him play a comic book superhero on the big screen, now they will! Well, kind of. Although… well, it may not be what folks were expecting. For starters, he isn’t headlining a movie. He will appear in next year’s ensemble ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’. And he won’t be an actual member of the Guardians, but perhaps better, he will play a character that was a member of the Avengers in the comics. Finally, it doesn’t seem as though Fillion will actually appear in the flesh, but may only appear one some… props.
Who is he playing?
Fillion will portray Simon Williams, who in the comics is also known as Wonder Man. In Williams’ “secret” identity, he is also an aspiring actor. It appears in the movie, he will actually be quite successful, as some new photos have hinted.
Yes, it looks as if Simon Williams will be an established, successful actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having starred in such hits as the romcom ‘Oh, Rebecca’ and barbarian flick ‘Arkon’ based on a real Marvel comic book character. He also appears to have starred in a biopic based on the likes of Tony Stark, whose poster looks more than a little like the one for ‘Steve Jobs’ in the real world.
All of these movie are playing at a Simon Williams Film Festival, with Fillion appearing on the various posters. The context for this scene is unknown. It clearly takes place on Earth instead of outer space, so we will have to wait and see how it factors into the new movie.
In the comics, Wonder Man has super strength and invulnerability as is also the worst dressed superhero ever. When he wasn’t dressed like Christmas, there wasn’t a horrible fad he didn’t jump on, from his 70s safari jacket to his 80s mullet.
Are you excited to see Wonder Man on the big screen, at least in some capacity? Or are you just excited to see Nathan Fillion in a comic book movie? Or upset that he doesn’t play a larger part?
‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2′ starring Chris Pratt, Zoë Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Pom Klementieff, Kurt Russell, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, and Glenn Close takes off on May 5, 2017.
