Longtime X-Men baddie The Blob made an appearance in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ played by Kevin Durand. The character was a member of Team X but his biggest scene was in a rather goofy boxing match with Hugh Jackman’s title character. But since ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ wiped out that movie as well as the much reviled ‘X-Men 3: The Last Stand’, The Blob is getting another shot at the big screen.
Although, this may not be much of an improvement.
In ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, The Blob appears again (for the first time) but in a familiar scenario, in a cage fight. However this time, instead of slugging it out with Wolverine, he appears to face off against The Angel (Ben Hardy)… and it doesn’t go his way.
Director Bryan Singer shared this new image on his Instagram:
In the new story, it’s reported that Angel and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) are both underground fighters in Berlin. The comic book character Caliban allegedly has something to do with this and Psylocke also enters the picture.
Fun fact: The Marvel Comics Blob made his first appearance in ‘X-Men’ #3 in 1964, in a tale entitled “Beware The Blob.” Of course, most folks are more familiar with the 1958 black and white horror movie ‘The Blob’ starring Steve McQueen, but the sequel to that film didn’t arrive until 1972 and was entitled… yep, ‘Beware The Blob’. But in this case, Marvel beat Hollywood to the punch.
The Blob in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ isn’t likely to have a very large role (no pun intended), but at the very least, this version is wearing a costume that is the spitting image of the one worn in the comics.
Are you happy to see this rotund bad guy in the new movie?
