Throughout comic book history, there have been a number of iconic couples. Superman and Lois Lane, Peter Parker and Mary Jane, or Archie and Betty/Veronica may come to mind immediately. Although, if you’re a True Believer with a slant towards the X-Men, there’s a very good chance that you could be thinking of Scott Summers and Jean Grey. But in the upcoming ‘X-Men: Apocalypse,’ rather than seeing the heroic couple leading a team of their own, we’ll see them at the beginning stages of their relationship. And apparently it gives a whole new meaning to love at first sight.

Back in 2000,  Famke Janssen and James Marsden portrayed the fully grown versions of Cyclops and Jean Grey in ‘X-Men’. Next month, director Bryan Singer will get to utilize these characters once again on the big screen, except they’ll be much younger and played by Sophie Turner and Tye Sheridan. And as is the case with most teenagers, they’re certainly going to have a bit of an awkward phase when they’re brought together for the first time. The filmmaker recently divulged the details of their tumultuous first meeting to Entertainment Weekly:

“In the beginning, she’s the last thing he’s interested in. When he first comes to the mansion, Scott’s blind so he can’t see her. Suddenly he gets some glasses and now he can see her and he’s like ‘Oh! That’s Jean Grey.’ Both of them are misfits in a way. Other mutants have settled in with their powers. This is all new to Scott Summers and he doesn’t like it and he doesn’t like school. And Jean, she not only has her telekinesis and her telepathy, but she also knows inherently that something darker and more powerful is growing inside her and she doesn’t quite know what it is.”

Honestly, Scott sounds like a bit of a brat here. Some might argue that the comic version of the character never really grew out of that phase. But as the old saying goes, opposites attract so Jean probably sees something else in him.  Hopefully, we get to see the more redeeming characteristics of young Cyclops in the movie amidst the epic battle against Apocalypse and his Horsemen.

Despite being a “professional writer”, Ben likes run-on sentences and puns far too much. Also, he thinks that Nathan is by far the coolest member of the Summers family. For more of his attempts at being funny and the occasional insightful thought, follow him on Twitter and Instagram.
