With the ‘Doctor Strange‘ trailer having just dropped to rave reviews we’ve just learned that director Scott Derrickson (‘Sinister’,’The Exorcism of Emily Rose’) had consulted with another Marvel director when making the film. While being a filmmaker with a solid history of horror and the fantastic from his past work, ‘Doctor Strange’ has to mix that with the Marvel Formula of printing money. In order to go about doing that we’ve learned that Derrickson had reached out to a man who was able to fully realize that formula by bringing another ragtag group of B-List superheroes to the big screen and completely wow fans who weren’t sure what they were in for.

So who did Derrickson consult? Clearly there was only one man to see:

“Everybody talks to everybody. I got notes on the Doctor Strange script from James Gunn, and I talked to him every once in awhile, asked him questions.”

So while of course he had to talk to everyone in order to make sure his movie would line up with the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe it was the director who so successfully brought us ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ that gave some advice. Honestly, I couldn’t think of someone better to ask than James Gunn with the task of making Doctor Strange a headliner.

I couldn’t be happier. While ‘Ant-Man‘ was a fun movie it was really ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ that has proven Marvel Studios can give us some of the lesser known heroes. While Doctor Strange has had many ongoing series and has been an Avenger for years, it is rare that he has been thought of as one of the A-list heroes even if being The Sorcerer Supreme makes him one of the most powerful men on the planet.

As this movie will be doing for magic and horror what Guardians did with science fiction, it really does make a lot of sense. Here’s hoping they can pull off another hit.
