Ever since Laura Dern (‘Jurassic Park’,’The Fault in Our Stars’) was cast in “Star Wars: Episode VIII‘ we’ve been wondering who she would be playing and a new rumor hint on both details about her character and a potentially large spoiler for the film.

You’ve been warned so assuming you read past this point it might be time to lose the element of surprise for the movie. The yet to be fully titled ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ won’t be out until 2017 and if the rumor mill for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ was any indication, we’ll be getting a huge batch of unsubstantiated plot details over the next year and a half with most of them proving to be inaccurate.

Still, with some of the bigger scenes of the last film leaked early, the potential spoilers here could still be huge.

So who will Dern be playing? We don’t have a name quite yet but from we’re told from the scenes she is in that you can tell she is either “a high-ranking officer or politician in the rebellion” and doesn’t get along too well with Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron.

The first of the scenes rumored has General Leia Organa receiving a serious injury and Dern letting “the film’s protagonists” know that they are truly the last of the Resistance against the First Order. Leia being so hurt that her life could be in danger will have strong ramifications in the film, especially if they end up sending her in the same direction of her late lover.

Another scene has her and Dameron going back and forth with one another after he leads a mutiny against her and her crew. Things aren’t going to be looking good for our heroes if they are fighting amongst themselves.

Speculation from this rumor has it that Dern’s character is a rival to Leia in the rebellion. While Leia’s stance in the government is that of the “Populists” who want more individual rights for planets, it looks like Dern’s is one of the “Centrists” who wants a strong central government. If this breaks out into infighting between the two factions it would make sense for Poe to side with Leia from their interaction in the first film in the new trilogy.

As always with rumors, there is no guarantee that we’ll see any of the above play out on the big screen. With Han Solo’s fate setting the stakes so high from ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ it makes you wonder if they might try to mirror the emotional rollercoaster by having Leia join him in the afterlife. Of course, the plan could backfire if we see a major character lost in every new film that is released.

‘Star Wars: Episode 8′ will be released on a theater not in a galaxy far far away on December 15th, 2017.
