While we’ve all wanted a ‘Hellboy 3‘ to happen, I don’t think anyone has expected it to see the light of day at this point and Ron Perlman is echoing that thought. Between Perlman’s increasingly busy schedule, the film never finding a studio who would finance it, and Guillermo del Toro jumping in and out of projects like there was no tomorrow, it just doesn’t seem like we would ever see it go anywhere.
While Perlman had been pushing for ‘Hellboy 3’ quite a bit last year, he recently went on record saying that it “probably will never happen, though you never say never never.” It sounds as if the actor would still be willing to do it but with the logistics of working on the second season of ‘Hand of God’ on Amazon and the first film from his studio-film fund Wing and a Prayer Pictures kicking off with ‘Pottersville’ soon, it just doesn’t seem to be in the cards. Especially when you follow it up with him expecting to star in ‘Asher’ and direct a film titled ‘Wooden Lake’. Perlman’s schedule is pretty full these days and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime in the near future.
There is still hope that del Toro might end up having a studio finance the film but even though he has some free time now that he is off of ‘Pacific Rim 2’. Unfortunately, his recent track record of starting and stopping about 20 projects at any given time might make the idea of an already lower profit margin movie being a risk.
With comic book films being the largest craze at the box office right now outside of ‘Star Wars’ it almost seems like a missed opportunity to not make the film with how excited the fans have been for it.
