After much speculation, Warner Brothers has found their Queen Hippolyta for ‘Wonder Woman’, and it’s Danish beauty Connie Nielsen.  Hippolyta is Wonder Woman’s mother and the leader of the Amazons, immortal warrior women who dwell on a secluded island called Themyscira or Paradise Island.

There had earlier been buzz that Nicole Kidman was in talks for an undisclosed role, which she ultimately did not accept.  ‘House of Cards’ star Robin Wright has been cast, and in both cases, it was Hippolyta that many expected them to be playing.  Wright is still in the movie, but her part is currently unknown.

Nielsen joins Gal Gadot who is playing the title hero, as well as Chris Pine, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya and Lucy Davis.  The movie is currently filming in the UK and Italy.  ‘Wonder Woman’ takes place in multiple time periods with photos having emerged showing some scenes being filmed set during World War I.

Nielsen is best known for her television work, having starred on ‘The Good Wife’, ‘The Following’, ‘Boss’ and ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’.  She has starred in many movies, including the role of a Roman queen in ‘Gladiator’, which should help her out in this film.

Now that we know who is playing Hippolyta, the question arises as to who Robin Wright will portray. Perhaps the reported villain, Circe?

What do you think?  Is Nielsen a good choice to play Queen Hippolyta?  What type of role should the Queen play in the story?

‘Wonder Woman’ is directed by Patty Jenkins and is slated for release June 23, 2017.
