True Believers have been begging and pleading for Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe since it was established. Now after a few failed franchises at Sony, that’s finally happening this year as Tom Holland will be introduced as the new friendly neighborhood web-slinger in ‘Captain America: Civil War’. But how will the House of Ideas bring one of their most iconic characters to the big screen to make third time the charm? Apparently one of his amazing friends will be the one to bring him into the fray.
Geek.com recently shared a report that may have revealed how Peter Parker will play a part in ‘Civil War’. Though this information is unconfirmed, some may see this as a MAJOR SPOILER. If you’re one of those people, then I suggest that you turn away now. Otherwise, here’s what they claim will go down:
Our source told us is that Tony goes to Peter Parker specifically to recruit him, and to seal the deal, offers him an advanced Spider-suit to fight in — an upgrade from whatever 15-year-old Peter was previously slinging around in. But why would Peter even consider such an offer? “Peter started becoming Spidey because he grew up and idolized Tony,” our source revealed. Since Iron Man takes place 10 years before we meet Peter in ‘Civil War’, where Peter is 15, that means Peter was five-years-old when Tony broke onto the scene in the original Iron Man, likely dominating the news as Peter grew into a teenager. If the guy you admire and look up to suddenly shows up on your balcony with a sweet piece of tech and says, “Hey, let’s be bros!” are you going to turn him down?
Previously, when asked about how Spidey would look, directors Joe and Anthony Russo said that we’d be getting “a mix of what everyone is wanting and a little twist”. We also heard that they’re bringing certain “innovations” to the costume that are more grounded, similar to the changes that we saw in Captain America’s uniform from ‘The Avengers’ to ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’. By having Stark entice young Parker with the Iron Spider suit while the teenage hero is wearing the classic blue and red, could this be the sort of wish fulfillment that the directors are alluding to? Photos (official or otherwise) are bound to be released at some point before May, so that question may be answered sooner rather than later.
But in terms of how the character makes his MCU debut, it all sounds pretty legit to me. Not only does it come off as inspired by the comics, but it makes a lot of sense that a kid like Peter, who is intelligent and inquisitive and grew up in this world of heroes, to look up to Tony and his Iron Man tech. However, as with any rumors of this sort, it’s best to take it with a grain of salt for now.
