giant-man ant-man

Spoilers can come from anywhere, especially now that movie studios will use any avenue to promote their latest projects. But it seems like the toy lines that tie into a film are more and more frequently becoming the source of plot points prior to a picture’s premiere. We’ve seen it happen over and over again over the last few years with films like ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, and recently ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows’. Now, the latest movie to fall victim to spoilers courtesy of a child’s plaything is ‘Captain America: Civil War‘.

Before we continue, this would be a good time to jump ship if you don’t want SPOILERS for Marvel Studios’ next epic blockbuster.

After sharing a number of upcoming Funko Pop vinyl figures earlier this week based on characters appearing in the Star Spangled Avenger’s next adventure such as Agent 13, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, and more, Twitter account @PopVinylz went on to reveal a new version of Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang. However, rather than listing him as Ant-Man, the packaging sports a different name for the size-shifting superhero:

For those wondering, Hank Pym (the original Ant-Man) went by a number mantles in the pages of Marvel Comics including Goliath, Yellowjacket, and the Wasp. But when he first started to use his powers to grow instead of shrink, Pym started using the moniker of Giant-Man (for obvious reasons). Now it appears that the name will carry over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, except Lang will be the one to use it since Michael Douglas’ Pym is out of the costumed hero game.

This toy jives with previous rumors that stated that Giant-Man would be making his big screen debut later this year in the Russo brothers’ highly anticipated followup to ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’. And though it is important to note that merchandise used to promote a movie doesn’t always reflect what we’ll see in the final product (for instance, when Iron Man was included in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Marvel Legends action figure line despite not being on the team in the movie), Funko doesn’t typically release their very popular Pops under a movie’s banner unless they’re actually appearing onscreen. But whether this is a swerve or not, it’s most definitely that Scott Lang will be in the movie one way or another.

What do you think about Giant-Man appearing in ‘Captain America: Civil War’? Are you excited about Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang gaining new powers? And do you think that you’ll be picking up this Funko Pop figure when it hits shelves? Let us know in the comments below.
