After the heartbreaking loss of companion Clara Oswald, ‘Doctor Who’ fans could use a bit of Christmas cheer and Sweeties, you may be in luck as this year’s Christmas episode promises to be a madcap romp featuring the return of Alex Kingston as Mrs. The Doctor, River Song. But unfortunately for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor, River doesn’t recognize him in his new form and spends the episode kissing and flirting with every man but him. And it seems she may have really stepped out on him, as the new episode bears the title “The Husbands of River Song.” That’s “Husbands” plural. Does that make The Doctor a brother-husband of some kind?
For those wondering about where this special falls chronologically for River, who is also a time traveler, Steven Moffat explained:
“It doesn’t really matter, but for those who care, it’s immediately after The Angels Take Manhattan [2012]. River’s just seen Matt Smith’s Doctor lose Amy and Rory, and obviously before The Name of the Doctor [2013] because she’s dead in that.”
So… there’s that.

It’s Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from carols and comedy antlers. But when the Time Lord’s help is requested he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy! King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) is furious and his giant robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole (Matt Lucas) survive? And when will River work out who the Doctor is?
All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and at a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time…
This Saturday, viewers will see the end of the current ninth season with the episode “Hell Bent.” “The Husbands of River Song” airs in the U.K. on Christmas Day (December 25th) at 5:15pm on BBC One. Its U.S. premier has yet to be announced.
