Don’t expect sleigh bells and roasted chestnuts this year, as ‘Doctor Who’ showrunner Steven Moffat describes this year’s holiday episode by saying “It is not the most Christmassy Doctor Who ever.”  Even so, fans should expect quite a treat in the form of The Doctor’s wife Professor River Song, played by Alex Kingston who is returning for a visit. However, since she has never encountered her husband in his current form, that of actor Peter Capaldi, she doesn’t recognize him, leading to a sexy cat and mouse.  As Moffat says, “It is a funny, fast madcap chase episode – with the Doctor being chased and also chasing River.”

He went on to comment in Kingston’s return and her interaction with the new Doctor saying:

“Russell [T Davies] said ‘you’ve got to bring her back – she has got to be together with Capaldi – it will be a sex storm.’ So I have – though the episode is not called ‘Sex Storm’ – I couldn’t get that past the controller – but it is a wonderful episode. There is wonderful chemistry between Peter and Alex. It had to be done.”

Capaldi also teased:

“Yes, there is [a chance for romance]. I’m trying not to give it away. My Doctor is different from the Doctors who were there when Alex first arrived. This Doctor’s different from that. It’s a different dynamic.”

“It is a lighthearted fun thing River doesn’t recognize the Doctor and he gets upset because she is flirting and doing all sort of stuff with people. She simply cannot be persuaded that he is the former Matt Smith/David Tennant/Christopher Eccleston – so there is lots of kissing, but not between River and the Doctor! It was great working with Alex. She is an old hand on the show – it was brilliant fun.”

As far as the lack of “Christmassy” elements, Moffat apologized.  It seems the episode will be a lot of fun either way, but the creator explained:

“The Tardis is covered in Icicles at the beginning but it moves on quite fast from that … basically you become aware of how many times you have done Christmas specials. Eventually you run out of things to do – or you end up with ‘deadly snake tinsel’”

Even without the excess of holiday cheer– and let’s be honest, there’s plenty of that everywhere else– hopefully fans can still enjoy the gift from this returning loved one.

Are you looking forward to this not so Christmas episode?
