In what is ultimately not a very surprising reveal (despite my sources claiming it was a huge spoiler for the upcoming ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘), we have learned that new villain Supreme Leader Snoke (who we already knew was being digitally created and performed by Andy Serkis) will be of truly monstrous proportions, towering over his minions in the First Order. According to a recent interview with Serkis, who little by little has been opening up about his mysterious character:
“I worked specifically with Domhnall Gleeson and with Adam Driver. My first day was basically standing on a 25-foot podium doing Lord Snoke without the faintest idea what he looked like… or in fact who he was! I was very high up, totally on my own, away from everybody else, but acting with them.”
Which means that not only is Snoke the big bad of the movies and potentially of the new trilogy (pardon the pun), but he will also be a dominating physical threat, with every part of Snoke being intimidating, including his voice, which Serkis also spoke about:
“We used sort of a ‘Kongolizer’ method of having sound come out of speakers to give a sense of scale and distance for the character. So it was very challenging and scary, in fact probably one of my most scary film experiences I’ve ever had.”
Serkis however, did go on to describe the villain, who he says could not have been done without CGI, but also humanizing him in a way:
“He is severely damaged. Although he’s a powerful leader, he comes across as vulnerable. Very scarred and disfigured.”
It is interesting to get these tidbits from Serkis, as aside from Luke Skywalker, Snoke is the only character from ‘The Force Awakens’ not to have been seen by the public so far, which I am hoping means Abrams and company want to save his reveal for the film itself, where we can truly experience the terror of seeing him for the first time without having seen images beforehand to prepare us for Snoke.
What are your thoughts on what Serkis revealed about Supreme Leader Snoke? Do you even care about details like this, or would you rather stay spoiler free until December 18th? Share your thoughts below!
