For the second time in his career, Paul Reubens— better known as Pee-Wee Herman– is playing The Penguin’s father.  The famed comedian will appear on the new season of ‘Gotham’ as the sire of Robin Lord Taylor‘s Oswald Cobblepot, the newly risen crime boss in the corrupt metropolis.

Taylor made the announcement this weekend at NYCC, gleefully declaring:

Pee-Wee Herman is playing my dad. What the hell?! Oh my God!

Reubens previously played the Penguin’s unnamed father in frequent collaborator Tim Burton’s ‘Batman Returns’ which came out in 1992.  (Diane Salinger played Reubens’ wife, also unnamed.)  The Cobblepots were aristocrats and when their son was born a deformed mutant, they abandoned him and he grew into the creepy fin-handed criminal of the film, opposite Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader.

Reubens has played a variety of characters through his long career, but of course is best known for playing spastic manchild Pee-Wee Herman, making him a perfect choice to play the parent of rather spastic, mamma’s boy Oswald.  That and their matching pointy noses.

For such a stooge, Cobblepot has a pretty impressive lineage.  Reubens joins comic great Carol Kane, who played Gertrude, Oswald’s mother in Season One.  At this point, the only thing for certain is that Reubens will appear as Papa Cobblepot.  There is no word on what type of relationship the father-son will have, when he will debut or how many appearances he will make.

Things have certainly changed for Oswald as the show has progressed.  He has grown into possibly the most powerful crime boss in ‘Gotham’, at least for now.  But he has also formed a tense alliance with fallen cop Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), the focus of the show.  Will this make daddy proud?  Or will it cause friction?

Are you anxious to see Paul Reubens join ‘Gotham’ as Cobblepot’s father?
