Earlier this week, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige participated in a Q&A to promote the release of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ on Blu-ray and DVD. The guiding force behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe spoke on a number of topics including ‘Captain America: Civil War’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, and more integration between the film and television sides of the company. While it seems like he talked about a lot of the big-ticket items coming up from the House of Ideas, he also addressed Marvel’s standalone short films known as Marvel One-Shots and when they’d finally be coming back.
Starting back in Phase One with ‘Thor,’ Marvel Studios started to include these One-Shots on home video releases to expand MCU mythology and provide more backstory on characters or events seen in their films. However, no new shorts were included with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, or ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’ But according to Screen Rant, Feige and his team are looking into doing more as part of the upcoming Phase Three, which will see the studio to move up to producing three films a year:
“We talk about that a lot actually, because when you have tables like that (lots of potential storylines, most unexplored in the finished film), and we go, ‘What are we going to do with Howard [the Duck]? What are we going to do with Cosmo? We should do a one shot with Michael Pena.’ I mean, the universe is big. We’re moving up to three movies a year and I’m not sure how much beyond that we can go so the one shots are great for: ‘Oh we have this great idea, wouldn’t it be fun to see…’ We talk about it a lot. We’re a relatively small team. We’re comfortable doing three movies a year so it’s just about finding the time and the place. But we have a backlog of ideas.”
Let me just say this right now: A Marvel One-Shot starring Michael Pena’s character from ‘Ant-Man’ would be amazing. Feige and company should consider following around Luis as he gets a tour of the New Avengers Headquarters. And I’m sure that he has stories about a friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s uncle that would fit in there somewhere.
And regarding that backlog of ideas, I really hope that there are plans for a Dum Dum Dugan short in there. With ‘Agent Carter’ currently filming season two, I’m sure that they can dust off Neal McDonough’s bowler hat and mustache for a quick short film pretty easily.
Well, now that we know what I want to see, who would you like to see star in a Marvel One-Shot as part of Phase Three? Do you think that these shorts should expand to include characters from ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ (besides Director Coulson) or ‘Daredevil’ in addition to the ones from the movies? Sound off in the comments below.
