The new fall season is only beginning, but fans and Fox are already looking forward to January when the seminal sci fi conspiracy series ‘The X-Files’ returns for a six-episode event.  Fox (the network) has released the first official trailer for the revival, which captures the atmospheric vibe of the original, but with more modern pacing (or maybe that’s just how the trailer was cut) and higher production values.

At any rate, the trailer reunites Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) with both his former partner and lover Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and FBI director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi).  But they aren’t the only familiar characters present.  The last image is that of The Smoking Man (William B. Davis), Mulder’s nemesis who menacingly growls, “We have a small problem” as the clip ends to the tune of  the famous whistling theme song.

Mulder, always the underdog of sorts, frantically exclaims, “They police us and spy on us, tell us that makes us safer. We’ve never been in more danger,” before affirming “This is my life, this is everything I believe in.”

Ever the skeptic, Scully responds, “You’re on dangerous ground here.”

Here’s the teaser that aired on FOX last night:

In addition to Duchovny, Anderson, Pileggi and Davis, look forward to return appearances by Tom Braidwood, Annabeth Gish, Deang Haglund and Bruce Harwood.  Joining them are new faces, including Joel McHale, Robbie Amell, Lauren Ambrose, Annet Mahendru, Rhys Darby and Kumail Nanjiani.

Creator Chris Carter

Series creator Chris Carter returns as both a writer and director of three episodes with Glen Morgan, Darin Morgan and James Wong each writing and directing an episode each.  Also contributing to writing chores on the sixth and final episode are Margaret Fearon and Anne Simon.

The original series ran for nine seasons from 1993-2002 and spawned two theatrical movies.  ‘The X-Files’ won 16 Emmy Awards among other accolades.

The new limited series kicks off with a two-night event on Sunday January 24th and continuing the following night, Monday 25th.  Subsequent episodes will air in the Monday time slot.
