Last year, TNT announced plans to jump on the super hero bandwagon with a live action series based on DC Comics’ ‘Titans.’  The announcement came as a surprise because at that point The CW was home to DC’s live action shows with ‘Arrow’ a solid freshman hit and plans to introduce a spinoff in the form of ‘The Flash.’  (The same network had previously aired ‘Smallville.’)  Also, TNT’s plans were to center the show around Nightwing, a.k.a. Dick Grayson, the original Robin, which would seemingly open the door to the Batman stable of characters.  But since then, there’s been almost no news on the show and since it isn’t on TNT’s fall schedule– or even begun production– most assumed it was dead.

But not so, apparently!

TV Line’s Matt Mitovitch made this simple announcements:

“Seeing how many got into a tizzy and feared the worst when TNT announced its fall/winter slate – and given that there has been no movement on the casting/production front – I asked around and have been assured that the DC Comics-based series is still in development. I asked around and have been assured that the DC Comics-based series is still in development.”

So there is still a possibility that a live action Nightwing will be swinging across TV screens in the future and bringing his powerful pals along for the ride.  The pilot, written by co-executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Marc Haimes was rumored to have gone into production this past summer, but that obviously didn’t happen.

The show is rumored to also feature comic book characters Starfire, Raven, Hawk & Dove and Barbara Gordon.  That makes for an interesting mix.  Raven– the daughter of a demon overlord and a human mother– was considered by The CW to star in her own series several years ago.

Things may get complicated with Barbara Gordon now that Fox has ‘Gotham’ on the air.  Her father, James Gordon, played by Ben McKenzie, is the main character on that show, so presumably that would prevent him from appearing in any form on another show on another network. (The same goes for Barbara Keane, her mother, but ‘Gotham’ has clearly taken that character in a different direction.)

Also spoken for is Deathstroke the Terminator, the Titan’s archenemy who, played by Manu Bennett, was a major villain on ‘Arrow.’  Between these two existing shows, a large number of Batman-related characters are already claimed.

But provided Dick and Barbara are free, this team dynamic could prove interesting as Barbara and Starfire have both been romantic partners of Nightwing’s.  No word on which incarnation of Barbara will be used.  She is the original Batgirl but is also notable for being Oracle, the computer ace that inspired the characters of Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack) on ‘Smallville’, Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) on ‘Arrow’ and Caitlyn Snow (Danielle Panabaker) on ‘The Flash.’  As Oracle, Barbara was known for being one of the most visible handicapped characters in comics.

Actor Steven R. McQueen, a big fan, has been lobbying hard to play Dick Grayson/Nightwing and honestly he looks the part.  He may still get the role… provided the development doesn’t take so long he grows out of the right age range.

Are you looking forward to a potential ‘Titans’ show on TNT?  Or do they just need to give up?
