After cleaning up the streets of supervillains (or more accurately, wannabe supervillains) as Hit-Girl in the ‘Kick-Ass’ films and facing just how horrible teenagers can be in the remake of ‘Carrie,’ Chloe Grace Moretz is setting her sights on aliens as she fronts her own young adult film franchise thanks to ‘The 5th Wave.’ Based on the sci-fi trilogy of novels by Rick Yancey, the story follows teenager Cassie Sullivan as she tries to survive the onslaught of an alien invasion that has practically wiped out humankind in an attempt to take over the planet. Last year, Sony Pictures acquired the film rights to the series and attached British filmmaker J Blakeson as the director and ‘Erin Brockovich’ screenwriter Susannah Grant to pen the script. Now, we have our first look at the movie thanks to an international trailer.

The first trailer is now online for the upcoming dystopian extraterrestrial thriller starring Moretz, Alex Roe, Zackary Arthur, Maika Monroe, Liev Schreiber, Ron Livingston, and Nick Robinson. Labeled as an “international sneak peek”, the video outlines the ruthlessness of the Others (the alien threat) and their first four waves of destruction. We also get a glimpse of Cassie’s quest to track down her little brother Sammy with the help of Roe’s Evan Walker. Check it out below, followed by the synopsis of the film”

Four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie teams up with a young man who may become her final hope – if she can only trust him.

While it certainly has its hints of tropes from the typical young adult fare, there are also remnants of alien invasion flicks. Based on what we’re seeing here, I’m getting a sort of ‘Divergent’ vibe mixed with ‘The Mortal Instruments’, ‘Independence Day’, or ‘District 9’ (but without the political message). The voiceover isn’t a great sign and this looks like it will probably blend right in with ‘The Maze Runner’ or whatever else comes out in this genre over the next few months. Of course, there’s always the chance that I could be wrong. More importantly, what do you think about ‘The 5th Wave’? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
