When Guillermo Del Toro created ‘Pacific Rim’, he was paying tribute to the classic Japanese Kaiju films and television shows of the 50s, 60s, and beyond. From Ultraman to Rodan to Mothra, these mythical monsters terrorized the world and movie-going audiences ate it up every time. But as the genre starts to get reinvigorated in Hollywood thanks to Legendary Pictures and films like ‘Cloverfield’ and ‘Godzilla’, could we possibly see a crossover that pits a Jaeger against the King of the Kaiju? Del Toro certainly hopes so.

While speaking to Movie Pilot about the world-building and new technology that will be present in the upcoming sequel, the filmmaker revealed that he’d love to have ‘Pacific Rim 2’ crossover with Gareth Edwards’ version of the legendary Godzilla. As we’ve already seen in Del Toro’s fan favorite film, monsters enter our universe through some kind of portal, so why not have Godzilla come through as well? Although as awesome as that sounds, it doesn’t seem like that’s where things are heading (despite how much the creative teams are all about it):Kaiju are quite mysterious. I’m sure that both teams of writers could come up with something where characters from one world end up in the other thanks to that portal.

“So far with the sequel, what we’re writing, what we’re creating, is very different, so there are no plans. Hypothetically, I would love the f*ck out of it. I would love to see a Jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be too much for the human brain.”

Though it doesn’t look to be in the cards right now thanks to sequels in the works for both ‘Pacific Rim’ and ‘Godzilla’, I don’t see there being too much of a problem actually making it happen. For starters, the origins of Godzilla and the other Kaiju are quite mysterious. I’m sure that both teams of writers could come up with something where characters from one world end up in the other thanks to that portal.

But then there’s the real world convenience of both franchises belonging to Legendary Pictures. If the movie studio is as into a crossover as the filmmakers are, then things should be pretty easy. Of course they’ll have to take into consideration the earnings of the sequels and the availability of everyone involved, but that comes later. For now, let’s just bask in the fact that this is a thing that could feasibly happen.
