Recently it was revealed that while Neil Blomkamp is actively working on his ‘Alien 5’ project, releasing concept art on the internet, and courting his actors to return, he cannot actually produce the film he is working on until Ridley Scott completes ‘Prometheus 2,’ as the elder director has made it clear his film needs to be put out first.

A source at Bloody-Disgusting recently shared the following information about the subject:

“‘Alien 5 is still very much in the works, as Fox remains hot on the idea. Blomkamp continues to work on the script (only an outline existed previously) and refine the tale he is telling. Ridley Scott is still producing, but has insisted on ‘Prometheus 2’ being made first.”

Which means that Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ film will now be shot in 2017 with the hope to have it released in 2018. The upside is that it should help alleviate scheduling conflicts for Sigourney Weaver, who is already committed to the ‘Avatar’ sequels with James Cameron in the coming years. Also, it gives Blomkamp more time to get Michael Biehn on board, who has not been officially asked to join the cast just yet. However, Biehn has made it clear, most recently at the Sheffield Film and Comic Con, that although he has not seen a script or been officially offered the role, he was pretty sure he would be asked to return, which sounds to me like he is pretty sure he will say yes if asked. Biehn also commented that he thinks Blomkamp’s film will completely ignore the third and fourth ‘Alien’ film, confirming rumors we have already heard, though the source (quoted above) from Bloody-Disgusting thinks it is too early to say whether or not those films will be entirely removed from the canon of the franchise.
