In a world where it’s so easy to get your entire movie spoiled (either by insiders leaking information or the advertizers just giving it away in the trailers) it must be nice for movie makers when there are at least some parts of their movie that remain a mystery. Martin Freeman‘s character in the upcoming ‘Captain America: Civil War’ is, so far, one of those nice little mysteries we still get to wonder about. Not much has really been said about him, we don’t even know his name. However, Freeman recently teased a little bit about what role his character will play.
“He works for the American government. He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes’ power, I suppose. So you’re not quite sure which side he’s on. It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another. It’s the kind of character I like because it’s ambiguous and because you don’t know whether he’s good or bad. I like that area that isn’t black or white, I like the grays, because I think there’s just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.”
Also confirmed is that Freeman will be using an “East Coast American” accent, not a Minnesotan accent, as fans of the TV show ‘Fargo’ may have been hoping for. While we still don’t know if this is a new character or an old one, there’s plenty of speculation. One of the more popular theories seems to be that of Henry Peter Gyrich, a government agent who at one point acted as the liaison between the Avengers and the government. He’s generally had a bit of an adversarial relationship with the superheroes, and could be seen as a villain. Another popular theory is that of Everett Ross, a U.S. official who is an expert on Wakanda, the African nation that Black Panther is king of. Either of these could easily make sense in the context of the Civil War film and their roles would ensure Freeman’s return in future Marvel movies. But the same could be said for a brand new character made just for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whoever he is, we may not even find out if Martin’s character is a good buy or a bad guy for a few movies yet. So until we have further information, let the speculation commence.
