It looks as if 20th Century Fox didn’t want any unofficial competition coming up against Neill Blomkamp‘s ‘Alien 5‘ as they just hit tribute film ‘The Alien Identity’ with a cease and desist letter.

For those of you unfamiliar with ‘The Alien Identity,’ it was a tribute film to ‘Alien’ which shows how Newt actually survived ‘Alien 3’ and follows her on an entirely new adventure. The idea is that both ‘Alien 3’ and ‘Alien Resurrection’ were just “cryo-sleep nightmares” and we pick up at where she is in her life 14 years after the events in ‘Aliens.’

In fact, the casting for this fan film was extensive with Carrie Henn who played the original Newt returning as her mother in a flashback sequence and Ricco Ross, who played Pvt Robert Frost returning as Ricco’s brother Richard. While the exact plot wasn’t laid out, it was teased that the film would play “heavily on the aesthetics of HR Giger.”

Although the project originally had a go-ahead from 20th Century Fox such as other fan films as ‘Predator Dark Ages’ had, this one ended up being cancelled. With the fact that events are being slightly retconned to bring Hicks back from the dead, the halt could be due to the possibility that this tribute film was just a little too close to the upcoming plot of Blomkamp’s film.

Sadly we’ll never know as Sonnet recently posted the following:

When we decided to make this Alien tribute film we anticipated from the beginning that this could happen. We were hoping that since Fox allowed other fan films in the Alien/Predator universes to be made that they would allow us to do so likewise.

Although we wanted to make a tribute film spin off in the Alien universe reuniting original cast members to play new roles, we understand that this is Fox’s intellectual property and we want to respect their wishes. Therefore, we peacefully withdraw from any further production of Alien Identity, and will pursue our own original content, which I think is best anyway.

We realize some of the fans will be disappointed by this, but we are happy that our talent from the tribute film will be coming on board taking the roles of original characters in our other Sci-Fi adventure Triborn, that we’ve been developing. We thank all the fans for their support and invite them to join us on another adventure.

It really is sad to see this happen but at least it did before the Kickstarter brought in the full funding or filming had begun.

What are your thoughts on Fox telling ‘The Alien Identity’ that its Game Over? Would you have wanted to see this happen or does what little we know sound a bit too much like what we’ll be seeing in ‘Alien 5’? Share your thoughts below!
